Big Fat Depressing Statistics

Dr. Shawn Talbott (Ph.D., CNS, LDN, FACSM, FACN, FAIS) has gone from triathlon struggler to gut-brain guru! With a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry, he's on a mission to boost everyday human performance through the power of natural solutions and the gut-brain axis.

Just wanted to share a few horrific statistics that crossed my radar recently…

Depression in the US has reached new highs: 29% of adults have been diagnosed with it (up 10 points from 2015); 18% currently have, or are being treated, for depression (up 7 points).  Source: Gallup, May 2023

The global cost of obesity is now estimated at a crippling $4 trillion by 2035. So it’s not entirely surprising to see that Novo Nordisk, the maker of obesity drug Wegovy (that I’ve written about many times), has seen such huge recent sales that it just overtook Nestlé (who recently announced that 54% of its food/beverages are unhealthy) as Europe’s second largest company. I think you’ll see the irony of a pharma company overtaking the valuation of the world’s biggest food company after launching a weight-loss drug (big food gives us diabetes/obesity and big pharma creates a pill or shot to “cure” us)?

Would it surprise you to know that we can actually solve both mood problems like depression and metabolic problems like obesity SIMULTANEOUSLY by supporting the Microbiome-Gut-Brain-Axis?

My book on the topic (Mental Fitness – Maximizing Mood, Motivation, & Mental Wellness by Optimizing the Brain-Body-Biome) is recently out as an Audiobook – and you can also watch many of the topics (and simple solutions) for free on YouTube.

We’re in an interesting time in history where the new science of the microbiome and Gut-Brain-Axis is providing us with natural tools to fight back against the damaging effects of stressful media-saturation, ultra-processed foods, and synthetic drugs – enabling us to not merely “survive” – but to significantly “thrive” in today’s modern world.
