Mental Wellness Going Mainstream

Dr. Shawn Talbott (Ph.D., CNS, LDN, FACSM, FACN, FAIS) has gone from triathlon struggler to gut-brain guru! With a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry, he's on a mission to boost everyday human performance through the power of natural solutions and the gut-brain axis.

I’ve written before about how topics related to Mental Wellness appear to be “trending” lately in mainstream media – which is GREAT!

I’m just returning from the International Society for Nutrition Psychiatry Research (INSPR) conference in London, where I spent the last 3 days with scientists, clinicians, counselors, dietitians, and many other health professionals interested in this growing area.

I presented a study where we supplemented “moderately stressed” volunteers with a combination of probiotics (good bacteria), prebiotics (special fibers that nourish good bacteria), and phytonutrients that support the entire gut-brain-axis. The combination supplement improved many aspects of microbiome balance, improved blood chemistry (cholesterol, blood sugar, etc), and dramatically improved how people felt (better mood, lower stress, sharper focus). I gave an online webinar about these results HERE.

I obviously love the research around how we can improve how people feel (naturally in many cases), but I think it’s also important that these discussions around Mental Wellness are no longer confined to scientific societies and medical conferences.

As just a few examples, look at some of the very recent media coverage encouraging people to start talking more about Mental Wellness…

CBS This Morning did an entire HOUR on Mental Wellness today (October 23) with a live studio audience = – it’s part of their overall initiative to get people to “de-stigmatize” the whole conversation about Mental Wellness = Stop the Stigma: Why we need more conversations surrounding mental health

HBO is also getting very active to tackling the “stigma” of mental illness in a new campaign =

One of the leading celebrity magazines – PEOPLE – that you’ll find on every check-out stand in America has a new Mental Wellness Initiative called “Let’s Talk About It” =

A little school up near Boston (Harvard!) regularly publishes educational series around the most prominent health topics – and this one came out just a few days ago = “Harvard Doctors Reveal How Probiotics Can Supercharge Your Health”

And finally (for now – there are more and more coming on a nearly daily basis) is the one where Oprah and Prince Harry announced back in April that they are partnering with Apple to launch a new docuseries about Mental Wellness – and just announced a few weeks ago that they have formed their creative team for the project =
