Mental Wellness Partnership

I’m looking forward to delivering the Keynote at the “Hearts & Minds” Conference next week in Honolulu.

The event is a 3-way partnership between NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Wellness); MHA (Mental Health America); and the CMWC (Certified Mental Wellness Coach program at Marietta College).

NAMI + MHA + CMWC = that’s a lot of alphabet soup – but you put it all together and we’re educating people around the world about how “Mental Health IS Physical Health” and it is important for all of us to understand how we can improve both.

Last week, we held an excellent 2-day in-person CMWC in Salt Lake City – and Early Access registration opened yesterday for the online version of the CMWC – and we are holding a special one-day Certification in Honolulu on March 27 – so we are trying to bring education about #MentalWellness to as many people as we can.

Here is the outline of my presentation for the conference – we will try to record it and post the video here…

Hearts & Minds & Microbiomes – Oh My!

-optimizing mood, motivation, and mental wellness by optimizing the brain-body-biome.

Presentation Description…

1. How the Microbiome-Gut-Brain-Heart-Axis is related to mental well-being

2. How to engineer their microbiome for ultimate mental performance (stress, mood, energy, focus, sleep, resilience, etc).

3. How to choose probiotics, prebiotics, and other nutrients for maximum benefits.

Learning Objectives…

1. Understand how bacteria in our gut determine what happens in our brain and relate to our overall mental well-being?

2. Understand how those signals get out of balance – and how to rebalance them?

3. What are some of the mistakes that people make when they think about “gut health”?

4. Can people do this with food and exercise alone – Where do supplements fit in?

ONLINE Certified Mental Wellness Coach

I am very excited to announce “early access” to the ONLINE version of the Certified Mental Wellness Coach (CMWC).

For the NEXT TWO WEEKS ONLY (March 19-31) we are offering a very special discount for students to take the course and earn their certification before the official launch in April.

Tuition for the online CMWC is $500 – but for the next 2 weeks, “early access” will only be $300 – so we can work with a limited number of students to ensure everything works as expected.

Register here = After registering, you will receive an email with a link and code to access the class

The online CMWC is the same 16-hours of content provided in the in-person class – delivered in a SELF-PACED format and covering the Microbiome, Gut-Brain-Axis, Heart-Brain-Axis, Immune System, Mindset, Movement, Nutrition, Sleep, Metabolism, Hormone Balance, and Aging.

Watch a short video here about what the course covers.

At the conclusion of the course, students will receive their Digital Badge from Marietta College as a Certified Mental Wellness Coach – and will maintain ongoing access to the website for Continuing Education as the science of the Microbiome and Mental Wellness progresses.

We have held in-person CMWC courses around the country in Wisconsin, Charlotte, Honolulu, Orange County, Salt Lake City, and several at 3 Waves Wellness in Plymouth MA – so I am very pleased to be able to bring the online version and our training on mental wellness to more people.

Please let me know any questions – and I look forward to “seeing” you in class.

Natural or Synthetic Weight Loss?

There has been a massive surge in demand for a class of diabetes and weight loss drugs known as “GLP-1 Agonists” (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro) – which is a synthetic way to emulate the effects of a hormone called “glucagon-like peptide 1” that can help people feel full.

Most people don’t know that GLP-1 is naturally produced by your gut – and you can increase your own production by taking the right strains of probiotics such as Lactobacillus plantarum DR7 and Bifidobacterium lactis BPL-1.

There is a good article here about the downsides of the drugs (like nausea, bloating, pancreas and thyroid problems, and rapid weight regain when you stop taking the drugs) – and another article here about how the drug industry is making billions in profits by heavily marketing these drugs to people who don’t really qualify for them (they are approved only for diabetics and severely obese individuals, not those looking to lose a few pounds). Even the diet company Weight Watchers is getting into synthetic weight loss drugs by acquiring a company that prescribes the drugs online and over the phone.

I’ve written about these GLP-1 drugs previously here and here – and have educated about better ways to approach weight loss naturally and support metabolism. By naturally harnessing our microbiome and gut-brain-axis, we can not only help ourselves lose fat, but also improve muscle mass, boost energy levels, and enhance all aspects of #MentalWellness – none of which you’re going to get from a synthetic chemical.

Last Call for Probiotic Weight Loss Trial

We have just a few spots left for our research study of a new probiotic strain for weight loss.

Details are here (you get FREE microbiome analysis and a FREE Garmin VivoSmart 4 fitness tracker watch).

The study is 12 weeks – you CANNOT be taking any other weight loss drugs or supplements – and you get to keep the Garmin fitness tracker watch at the end.

You need to have access to a body fat scale for measurements at baseline/start and weeks 4-8-12

We will send you the collection kit for cortisol and microbiome samples and you will send those back to the lab in a pre-addressed and stamped envelope.

YES – you can (and should) get some friends to do the study with you – more fun to share the journey!

We will start the supplementation at the beginning of April – which is about 2 weeks away.

Hope that helps – please get in touch with Julie if you’re interested in volunteering…

Background – Why Becoming a CMWC is Important

At no time in human history have we ever been so “advanced” technologically and yet so miserable psychologically.

It’s no exaggeration to describe stress, depression, anxiety, and burnout as epidemics – literally the “Black Plague” of our modern times.

How you feel is not just in your head, it’s also in your gut, and your heart, and your immune system, and in many other places inside and outside the actual brain in your head.

National surveys show that happiness and life satisfaction levels are at all-time lows, while depression, suicide, drug addiction, and use of prescription antidepressants and pain-killing opioids are at all-time highs.

There is no physical health without mental wellness. They are two sides of the same coin, and they are vital for each other and for our ability to reach our peak potential in this one life that we have to live.

The CMWC will explore research-supported natural approaches can improve how we feel mentally and perform physically in every aspect of our daily lives, including:

  • What is Mental Wellness Coaching
    • Education, Guidance, Training, Support to help unlock potential
    • Why EVERYONE needs a coach!

Microbiome and Weight

I’ve written many times about the scientific links between our gut microbiome and our weight through a variety of mechanisms, including appetite signaling, metabolism, motivation, movement, sleep, and many others.

Here is a new video and slides (below) where I unpack some of the science and the application of harnessing our microbiome to help us lose weight (“take it off”) as well as help us prevent weight regain (“keep it off”).

Hope you enjoy – and please let me know any questions in the comments below?
