Mental Wellness Coach – Weekly Webinar Update

Thanks to everyone who joined me this past Wednesday on the Weekly Webinar for Certified Mental Wellness Coaches. (We hold this every week within the Marietta College online “Canvas” platform).

The chat transcript for our session on Wednesday July 26 is pasted below (so you can see some of the topics discussed) – and the video is also posted on YouTube HERE because we talked a lot about “weight loss challenges” and I thought a wider audience could benefit from that discussion.

Our primary discussion hinged on some new studies on the growing scientific evidence for Probiotics delivering mood benefits in depression and weight loss benefits in obesity.

We’re reaching the point now where we are seeing DOZENS of excellent studies uncovering the important role of the Microbiome and Gut-Brain-Axis for improving mental wellness (stress, depression, anxiety, resilience, cognition), metabolism (blood sugar, fat storage, appetite), athletic performance (muscle building, inflammation, recovery, immune protection), and so many other aspects of mental wellness and physical health.

Next week, the Weekly Webinar will be on Friday (August 4th) and the topic will be…

How to Talk about Dietary Supplements – Science versus Claims?

This is an important topic (that I’ve lectured about extensively and written book chapters about) – and I will talk about the differences and distinctions between things like how certain supplements might have excellent scientific evidence for helping with something like “ADHD” but the claims for the supplement can only refer to “supporting mental focus” (even if the study shows equal effectiveness to a drug used to “treat” that “disease”)…some of the specific topics I will cover will include…

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD – the disease) or depression (the mood state)

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD – the disease) or anxiety (the mood state)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD – the disease) or irritability (the mood state)

Attention -Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD – the disease) or focus (the mood state)

Hope to “see” you on the next webinar – here is the chat transcript from the last Webinar about Probiotics/Depression/Obesity…

00:09:18 AJ Wheeler: Hell Dr. Shawn- what is the best way to conduct a personal family study/any study? Seeing some early “on hit wonder” results with my fam. Thanks
00:12:41 Katarina Herda: I love seeing others questions / answers! Thank you 🙂
00:14:00 Yvonne King: Very cool. I had not seen all of this 🙂
00:14:06 Cindy Blossey: Hello everyone! 💕
00:14:18 AJ Wheeler: Very helpful- I like grab and go resources!
00:14:48 Cindy Blossey: Reacted to “Very helpful- I like…” with ❤️
00:16:46 Jeanine Lano: FINALLY!
00:17:58 Cindy Blossey: WOW!! I wish they knew this in the 70’s!!
00:21:41 Jeanine Lano: My psychiatrist said there’s not enough studies to prove supps work. Not saying he’s right or wrong – just sharing.
00:22:06 Cindy Blossey: This is a huge breakthrough for nutrition and psychological interventions to work together! ❤️
00:22:42 Jeanine Lano: I agree Cindy!:)
00:23:01 Cindy Blossey: Reacted to “I agree Cindy!:)” with ❤️
00:23:22 Jeanine Lano: Do other companies specify strain designation, or just amare?
00:25:50 Yvonne King: I sometimes get clients that say the stomach acid destroys probiotics. How do you respond to that?
00:25:52 Cindy Blossey: @Jeanine, not surprised. Are you taking supplements to show your psych. that nutrition can work with meds?
00:28:13 Gut Gal: How do we get access to this to share with our clients?
00:28:46 Yvonne King: How do you think Seed works with SIBO, in theory if the cap open in the large intestine, it should help with SIBO.
00:28:56 AJ Wheeler: Question: Weaning Off Prescriptions: How does someone do that safely?
00:29:39 Cindy Blossey: I have leads that say that they don’t want the supplements to affect their meds. How should I respond to that?
00:30:08 Jeanine Lano: I feel like I need to take double my supps w/Amare to get to a level where I was with Zoloft, which is def way more $, but I just don’t want to go back on it.
00:30:31 Colleen Sullivan: Can you review our SIBO protocol and how it helps.
00:32:02 Jeanine Lano: Cindy – I asked that same question when I first came here, and the answer was our prods were designed to able to work well with most meds., but we always refer them back to their docs. I and my husband were taking meds at the time, my sister takes meds, and we all did fine, but def. personal choice and always refer back to doc.
00:32:33 Cindy Blossey: Reacted to “Cindy – I asked that…” with ❤️
00:33:11 Cindy Blossey: Replying to “Cindy – I asked that…”

Thanks!! Unfortunately, most docs are sooooo old school. 🤣
00:35:10 Katelyn Sutton: Replying to “Cindy – I asked that…”

It’s true, but it would also be irresponsible to tell someone they can just stop taking their meds or reduce their dosage on their own. I talked to my doctor about what I was looking to do and she helped me lower my dose and then have a follow-up to see how it was going until I was off it. She didn’t understand what I was taking but focussed on how I was feeling and how things were going for me
00:35:31 Lisa Schaffer: can you share that graph you just described
00:35:38 nicolesimmonds: What is a specific protocol we can recommend to people who were on GLP-1 medications and now are looking for natural options? GBX fit + Burn + digestive + seed fiber

Running to Beat Depression

As many of you know, I’m running the Chicago Marathon on October 8 to raise money for Erika’s Lighthouse – which has helped millions of students to know the signs of depression and how to seek help.

In the most recent school year alone (2022-23), Erika’s Lighthouse has directly impacted over 534,000 students!

It is important for these programs reach every student in the school because we know that students often turn to friends for help.

We want every student to know the signs and symptoms of depression and how to get help for themselves or a friend.

Here are a handful of responses we received to the question, “How has your ability to help someone with depression changed because of the Erika’s Lighthouse program?”

If you’re able to make a donation to support us, every dollar helps us reach more students.

Thank you for your support and for bringing these lifesaving skills and knowledge to students nationwide!

“I know now how to deal with my or someone else’s depression”

Happy Mama Nutrition

In our last “weekly webinar” for the Certified Mental Wellness Coach class, we had a good discussion about “what pregnant women should be eating” – both for them and for their developing babies.

We also discussed what moms should be eating AFTER delivery – to help them with their MOOD and help them get back to their “pre-pregnancy” selves (stress resilience, hormone balance, baby weight, etc).

Here is a little video that unpacks some of that and provides some specific supplement recommendations.

What should a pregnant woman eat – and how should she supplement – to maintain her mood, energy, and resilience during pregnancy and after?

~5-6 million pregnancies yearly

~1 million women suffer post-partum-depression (PPD) and post-partum-anxiety (PPA) yearly (this is how much is reported, so the true occurrence is actually higher)

Pre-Partum Pack

•Nutrition  = VitaGBX + OmMega

•Constipation/Digestive  = Digestive/Probiotics

•Microbiome  = Mentabiotics

Post-Partum Pack

•Microbiome  = Mentabiotics

•Depression/Anxiety = Mood+

•Hormones = Ignite

•Weight  = Fit/Burn

Mental Wellness Coach Weekly Webinar

Had another great call with our Certified Mental Wellness Coaches…

This week, we talked about the important “Burnout Survey” conducted by Deloitte (and how Certified Mental Wellness Coaches might be able to help) – and answered a lot of questions about immune support, leaky gut, fermented foods, and natural support for cancer and other conditions.

Here is the chat pasted below – and the video recording will be posted in Canvas in case you were not able to join live or you want to rewatch.

(Sorry multi tasking) It depends on the company. No one addresses items within themselves and some bosses threaten if you are offline for too long (and accuse you of being lazy). Have experienced many people in mgmt have been taking out their issues on employees (toxic enviro). I would add that several ppl I know refuse to address their previous covid (asymptomatic or other) and refuse to follow up or pay attention to symptoms due to “covid news fatigue”.. thus secondary mental anxieties or blame games are at an all time high.

The HR programs for employees on paper look great but the practice is not happening, causing some to be laid off or lose bonuses .. if an employee tells ppl they need time or a nap due to fatigue.

Employee Burnout Epidemic?

I’ve been researching and writing about “burnout” (physical fatigue, mental exhaustion, and feelings of languishing) for more than 20 years. – and I’ve never seen the situation as bad as it is today.

I’ve also been researching and writing about the opposite of burnout – known as “vigor” (physical energy, mental acuity, and emotional well-being) – and natural ways to improve how we feel and perform.

Burnout statistics hit all-time highs during the pandemic – as workers shouldered more and more responsibilities (working from home, kids schooling from home, lack of distinction between work/home life, uncertainty about health/economy/etc) – it was a lot.

However, now that we’re firmly “post-pandemic” – we’re seeing burnout continuing to rise – especially as employers attempt to herd workers back into the office. As recent surveys suggest, many employees are resisting a return to “normal” in the name of good health.

A new report from consulting firm Deloitte surveyed more than 3,000 workers from the C-suite to managers to frontline workers – and found some very disturbing stats about the state of workplace well-being.

The bottom line is that most of us have work lives that are making us sick – mentally and physically.

Some key findings…

  • In 2023, only 63% of workers rated their physical health positively.
  • Up to 40% say a toxic work environment is harming their physical, mental, or social health.
  • Only about a third reported improved health from last year, across all categories.
  • Just 42% say they have enough time for friends and family.
  • Only 48% engage in daily physical activity, while 55% get under seven hours of sleep.
  • 74% have difficulty taking time off or disconnecting from work.
  • Unfortunately, a majority of executives are clearly out of the loop – believing that employee well-being is actually improving, with 77% citing better mental health for their organization.

Investments in workforce wellness have the potential to deliver outsized returns – but the short-sighted vision of many executives often make it difficult to implement meaningful programs (hint: chair massages, step challenges, and meditation apps won’t cut it).

Luckily, there are a few brave companies that are forging ahead. For example, Exos (performance enhancement company) launched a “burnout rehab” program that has been shown to reduce stress by 70%. Both Headspace and Calm have developed meditation and mindfulness tools to support HR teams. Connected device leaders, Whoop (stress recovery band) and Oura (sleep ring), have entered workplace wellness as well (I use – and love – both of these devices to support my own mental and physical well-being).

Beating Burnout?

Holistic approaches are in high demand – and are really the only way to effectively solve the problem.

As we’ve been doing with our Certified Mental Wellness Coach program (CMWC) – training people to think more holistically about how to improve body/mind performance – some of the big guys are getting into the act, with BetterUp, Journey, and Liberate using digital coaching to build more resilient teams. Bitewell recently raised $4M for its corporate “food-as-medicine” offering. And Enthea added $2M in December to make psychedelic therapy a workplace benefit. The Global Wellness Institute has identified health coaching as one of the most important wellness trends over the past few years.

The CMWC focuses on the new science of the Microbiome-Gut-Heart-Brain-Axis to improve mental well-being and physical performance. Numerous lifestyle interventions such as nutrition, movement, sleep, supplements, mindset, social connections, spending time outside, and exposure to water (blue therapy), plants (green therapy), and sun (yellow therapy).

The bottom line is that ~60% of workers are ready to leave their jobs because their mental and physical health is suffering – but that also means that ~60% of workers are also looking for a company that prioritizes their well-being. Most workplaces need a radical revamp that emphasizes work-life balance – that can create benefits for worker well-being as well as corporate productivity/profits. This also a creates a lucrative opportunity for coaches that can enable that shift.

Mental Wellness Coach Calls

We just wrapped up our first “Weekly Webinar” for the Certified Mental Wellness Coach course (CMWC) – and I just wanted to share the discussion that we had in the chat box (pasted below)…

Registration for the July cohort of the CMWC will remain open until the end of this week (Saturday July 15) – you can see those details HERE.

Each week, we will have a 1-hour (ish) call where I will highlight new research and practice tips – and then answer questions about whatever is on your mind?

We record all of these calls and post them within the Marietta College Canvas platform where we hold the Certification.

As you’ll see from the chat chatter below, we had a lively discussion this week about artificial sweeteners, blood sugar balance, natural flavors, fasting, and much more…

I hope to “see” you in class one of these days…

natural flavors are derived from actual fruits and sources, under specific federal declarations and guidelines. There are some items that can be alarming in a chemistry format (but note- it must be found naturally, etc) - where states like CA have regulations that are more strict - about residue of the extraction chemicals, etc. But also because of that, natural flavors are even more strict now. The odd items that fall under natural flavors are items that might be enzyme or further processed and derived from licorice, vanilla, stevia, even sugar-- while some are just natural fruit juices or even mushroom compounds.

Registration for July Mental Wellness Coach Certification is OPEN!

We are excited to open registration for the next cohort for the Mental Wellness Coach Certification.

We are keeping the tuition as low as possible – so it will remain at $500 for as long as possible (but probably not forever) – even as we continue to add further enhancements to the course.

You can register here = https://swipesimple.com/links/lnk_bee924af

What does the course include?

11 primary educational sessions spanning ~16 hours of video education on all the lifestyle factors that impact our Mental Wellness (positive and negative), such as…

Microbiome, Gut-Brain-Axis, Heart-Brain-Axis, Nutrition, Sleep, Movement, Supplements, Mindset, Metabolism, Hormone Balance, Aging, and much more…

Digital copy of “Mental Fitness – Maximizing Mood, Motivation, & Mental Wellness by Optimizing the Brain-Body-Biome

Digital copies of multiple “special reports” from the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) on the Mental Wellness Economy, Health Coaching, and Lifestyle/Wellness Trends

Downloadable PowerPoint slides for each lecture (so you can create your own digital library)

Active Discussion area – think of this as your exclusive “sounding board” to ask your questions and get answers to help you build your coaching business and educate your clients and customers about the best products and programs to help them reach their Mental Wellness goals.

Our course has been approved for CEUs (continuing education credits) from numerous professional boards, including chiropractic, naturopathic, nursing, fitness/nutrition, and many others, including full-approval by the National Academy for Sports Medicine (NASM) and the Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA).

In addition to the CMWC being closed-captioned and mobile-friendly, we have also added a Printable Certificate of Completion (to hang on your office wall) to complement the unique Digital Badge awarded to all Certified Mental Wellness Coaches.

Next week, we will begin our Weekly Wednesday Webinars (Lunch & Learn at 1pm ET / Noon CT / 11am MT / 10am PT) – where we will discuss Science, Product recommendations, and Trouble shooting different situations related to lifestyle modification of mental wellness and physical health issues.

In the coming weeks, we will be adding a variety of expert interviews from experts such as Trish Barrus, PhD (10 Principles of Recovery – a positive psychology approach to addiction and life) and Emeran Mayer, MD, PhD (Gut-Brain-Immune Connection).

Our “in-person” CMWC costs $1,500 (2.5 days of training), but we will keep the tuition for the self-paced ONLINE version at a super-affordable $500 so we can continue to train as many Certified Mental Wellness Coaches as possible.

More CMWCs means more people in the world will be feeling better with elevated mood, lower stress, sharper focus, higher energy, bolstered resilience, and superior sleep quality.

Link to register = https://swipesimple.com/links/lnk_bee924af

After registering, you will receive a payment receipt from 3 Waves Wellness – and within 2 business days you will receive an access link from Marietta College that you can use to start the course.

Let us know any questions in the comment area below – and Subscribe below to receive notifications of new articles posted – and hope to see you in class!

July Mental Wellness Coach Certification?

I’ve had a lot of questions about registration for the July Certified Mental Wellness Coach (CMWC) class – so I just wanted to let everyone know…

Since this week is the 4th of July, a lot of the offices at Marietta College will be closed, so rather than having new students register and be delayed to get their online log-in credentials, we will wait until July 5th (Wednesday) to post the new registration link.

Lots of cool new content (including weekly webinars) coming in this next offering – so please stay tuned!
