Off to a Good Start at Metabolic Research Center

Amazing media pickup of our press release earlier this week!

Almost 100 media outlets reporting on my new role as Chief Science Officer at Metabolic Research Center and President at Metabolic Direct, including:

Boston Globe

I am very excited to be bringing together the 30-year heritage of Metabolic Research Centers (~100 physical bricks & mortar centers around the country), with the new Metabolic Direct division (independent Metabolism Coaches, now in pre-launch phase for national and international expansion), and our online direct-to-consumer platform (www.emetabolic.com)
Our new line of EQQIL products will be launching in January 2016 – and we have a stellar team of product, education, and marketing experts already hard at work to bring them to market.
EQQIL Tagline = Empowering Your Best You

The “problem” that we are solving is one of “stress-induced imbalance” – when we’re exposed to various stressors (psychological/emotional, dietary, environmental, physical, etc) our bodies/minds become biochemically imbalanced (cortisol, glucose, inflammation, oxidation, etc) – leading us to feel fatigued, depressed, unmotivated, gain weight, etc.
The “solution” to looking your best, feeling your best, and performing your best is to restore biochemical balance – that is what EQQIL will provide and become known for.

What we do – develop “anti-stress” products and programs that empower people to Look, Feel and Perform Their Best

How we do it – by reducing metabolic stress, balancing biochemistry, and restoring vigor naturally (with distribution via physical centers such as MRC, independent Metabolism Coaches, and self-directed online/direct-to-consumer programs)

Why we do it – so people can develop and achieve their Best Future Self (and share that with others)

I hope that you’ll stay tuned and follow our progress at this blog and the social media channels below.
Thanks,
Shawn

Top Energy Boosting Super Foods and Supplements

As busy and productive people with over-scheduled, stressful lifestyles (sometimes combined with little quality sleep and poor eating habits), it is no wonder so many of us feel drained. Saying that you feel tired usually describes a symptom of our body being out of biochemical balance. It could mean that we’re feeling emotionally burned out. We may have brain fog. Or, it could be actual physical fatigue from not getting enough sleep. All of this has its roots in chronic stress, and it leads us to not feel as engaged and focused as we want to be.

By managing inflammation, stress, and oxidation and improving nutrition we can boost our energy levels. Anti-inflammatory foods boost energy because having too much inflammation in your body can cause the brain to experience mental exhaustion and burnout.

The two best anti-inflammatory foods to add to your grocery list are dark chocolate and blueberries. Dark chocolate contains both theobromine for sustained mental energy; and a small amount of sugar, for reducing sweet-cravings induced by the stress hormone, cortisol. Blueberries are packed with potassium, vitamin C, and flavonoids, which activate the body’s internal production of antioxidant enzymes for profound anti-inflammatory benefits, especially for the brain.

When the body is exposed to chronic stress it produces more of the stress hormone, cortisol, which leads to muscle loss, immune system suppression, and both mental and physical exhaustion. Two of the most effective anti-stress foods are pumpkin seeds and green tea. Munching on roasted pumpkin seeds can have a relaxation effect form both the “crunching” action and because they contain a high content of the amino acid, tryptophan, which has a relaxing effect in the brain. Green tea contains another amino acid called theanine, which has a physical and mental relaxation effect, yet also improved mental focus and improves a state known as “relaxed alertness.”

For a direct injection of energy, be sure to get your Bs, C and Omega-3s! Whole grains are a rich source of the entire family of B-complex vitamins, which are essential for the metabolism of food into cellular energy. Eating more healthy omega-3 fatty acids from fatty fish or fish oil supplements have been shown in numerous research studies to support mood and reduce inflammation. Brightly colored fruit and veggies provide cell-protecting phytonutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, flavonoids and carotenoids that reduce oxidation and inflammation – both of which can cause cellular damage, drain energy levels and accelerate aging.

Avoid traditional high-caffeine and sugar energy drinks. The high levels of caffeine and simple sugars in most energy drinks can cause a blood sugar spike and then an energy crash a couple hours later. Likewise, refined carbs and processed foods cause inflammation and lead to destruction of collagen and elastin in the skin – so you’ll look as bad as you feel. Instead, look for the new generation of “feel good” drinks like that contain concentrated servings of flavonoids and other polyphenols such as New Zealand pine bark along with other nutrients like theanine to maintain sustained mental and physical energy levels with the added benefits of stress resilience, improved mood and sharp mental focus.

MAHR and Leadville 100

The Leadville 100 trail run is coming up in about 3 weeks (August 22) – so I’ve spent the last month training exclusively at my maximal aerobic heart rate (MAHR) to improve my fat-burning engine. After Leadville, I’ll need to make a quick change in training back to more high-intensity lactate threshold work so I can defend my title as “World’s Fittest CEO” a month later (Sept 18-20).

Why MAHR? Dr. Phil Maffetone does a good job of explaining how to find your MAHR and why it’s a good idea to train in this zone. Training at your MAHR takes patience – many endurance athletes simply can’t do it because they feel like they need to be “going harder” so they feel like they got a “good workout” at the end of their session. Training at MAHR teaches your body how to burn fat more efficiently, increases levels of fat-burning enzymes, and generally gets your body ready to “go steady” for a long time (like the 100 miles of trails across Leadville). Contrary to popular belief, however, training in this “fat-burning zone” is NOT the best way for the average person to shed body fat or to lose weight in general (more on that topic in a future blog).

My biggest challenge during this last month of MAHR training has been to keep my heart rate below 140 beats per minute – but it’s been tough because I’ve also been in startup phase for my new nutrition company, EQQIL. I generally run with a small voice recorder so I can keep track of to-do items and product ideas that come to me in my “brainstorming” workouts. I’ve been finding myself getting so excited about the new company and our new approach to helping people achieve their best selves – that I keep running faster than my MAHR should allow (thanks goodness for my HR monitor to alert me to dial it back).

Today, Aug 3, is the first time that the entire EQQIL is getting together – and we plan to have our first products and programs introduced to the market in Sept – so please stay tuned for more information.

Thanks for reading,

Shawn
