Fall Midwest Speaking Tour

Dr. Shawn Talbott (Ph.D., CNS, LDN, FACSM, FACN, FAIS) has gone from triathlon struggler to gut-brain guru! With a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry, he's on a mission to boost everyday human performance through the power of natural solutions and the gut-brain axis.

Just wrapping up a phenomenal tour through the Mid-West with speaking stops on Chicago, Lansing, Sioux Falls, and Minneapolis. Record attendance in all cities tells me that people are excited and interested in hearing about a NEW approach to health & wellness, as well as the opportunity to take charge of their financial future.

I just finished a sold-out event (300+) at the magnificent Minneapolis Institute of Art (Saturday, November 1) – hosted by Susan Kuhlman and Scott Kuhlman. In Minneapolis, I was fortunate to share the speaking duties with Dr. Tracy Bargman, Paleo Nutrition Coach Terry Shanahan, and Dr. Mark Gordon – it was really a special event!

On Thursday (October 30), we had a standing-room-only (300+) crowd in Sioux Falls – hosted by Shawn & Michelle Poe and Kerry Williams.

On Wednesday (October 29), I had the great pleasure of speaking to a group of over 250 people at the University Club at Michigan State University in Lansing Michigan about nutrition, biochemical balance, vigor, and how they can help themselves (and others) to Feel, Look, and Perform at their Best. The Lansing event was hosted by Marcia & Dave Livingston, and Fred & Janet Tinning

The night before (Tuesday, October 28), I spoke to another group of over 200 folks in Chicago at the Quinlan Life Sciences Auditorium at Loyola University. Anna Tavarozzi-Ringo hosted my visit and I was thrilled to be able to share the stage with my good New England buddy, Premier Pro 6 Dan Moellering, who delivered a masterful outline of the LifeVantage Business Opportunity. Dan was joined for business training after the event by Elite Pro9 Scott Satterfield – and TONS of people stayed late into the night to hear about this amazing business opportunity with cutting-edge LifeVantage products.

While I was in Minneapolis, I was invited to visit two of the local television stations on Friday afternoon (KARE-11) and Saturday morning (KMSP-FOX 9 Weekend News) – you can view the TV segments at the links below:

KARE-11 (Super Foods That Boost Energy and Reduce Stress)

KMSP-FOX-9 = (Good Mood Foods) – I’ll link to this as soon as the station posts the video online…

What am I talking about in these meetings?

Short version = how to maintain proper balance in our bodies so that we can have ultimate health and help ourselves to feel our best – look our best – and perform at our best.

Longer version:

Millions of people consume antioxidant supplements to protect their health (A, C, E, beta-carotene, selenium, etc) – but it’s actually killing them. The latest scientific evidence shows that traditional antioxidant supplements are destroying health, increasing cancer risk, and accelerating mortality rates. The safest and most effective way to protect the body and improve well-being is to activate the body’s own internal protective pathways – a coordinated stress-response system found inside every cell in the body – all we have to do is trigger it.

Every cell in our body contains an exquisitely designed system of protective enzymes and repair proteins. This built-in surveillance system, called the Nrf2-pathway, is very much like an internal cellular thermostat for stressors that can damage our cells and ruin our health. The Nrf2-pathway senses – and responds to – a variety of damaging cellular stressors such as reactive oxygen molecules from sunlight or air pollution. Left unchecked, these cellular stressors cause damage to delicate cell membranes, genetic material (DNA), and mitochondria (our cellular energy factories) – leading to disease, dysfunction, and what we observe as the “aging” process. As cellular damage accumulates, each of the trillion cells in our body works less and less efficiently – and we’re less likely to feel energetic, or focused, or even as happy as we could be. However, by naturally triggering Nrf2, and protecting our cells right down to the genetic level, we have a built-in “switch” that can help us to feel fantastic, look lovely, and achieve peak performance. This scenario of being able to feel our best, look our best, and perform our best, is what I refer to as our “best future self” – and it’s achievable by triggering Nrf2.

Hundreds of natural bioactive plant compounds are known to trigger the Nrf2 pathway – and dozens more are being discovered every year. In many cases, the main reason that a particular fruit, vegetable, spice, or herb is “good for us” is because of its ability to trigger Nrf2 and set in motion the production of the cell’s own protective proteins. We’ve known for decades that foods like tea, berries, and citrus fruits contain antioxidants (flavonoids) that reduce risk of diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and dementia. Just in the last few years, we’ve learned that these flavonoid-rich foods are “good for us” because they naturally trigger Nrf2 – thus setting in motion our internal protective mechanisms. Recent scientific evidence is uncovering that the anti-inflammatory effect of healthy spices such as turmeric (curcumin) and ginger (gingerols) is due to Nrf2 triggering; that the mental-focus benefits of herbs such as ashwagandha (withaferin) and bacopa (bacopasides) are due to Nrf2 triggering; that the anti-cancer effects of green tea (catechin), pine bark (proanthocyanidins), garlic (allicin), and broccoli (sulforaphane), are due to Nrf2 triggering. Unfortunately, even as modern scientific evidence is rapidly accumulating about the health benefits of triggering Nrf2, we’re eating fewer fruits and vegetables than ever, using lower amounts of spices, and almost completely ignoring the natural herbal medicine chest that is right at our fingertips.

If you think about the modern world in which we live, you’ll realize that we’re surrounded by myriad sources of stress. Emotional stress from work deadlines, bills, traffic, relationships; Physical stress from normal aging, sleep deprivation, lack of exercise (or too much); Environmental stress from air/water pollution, sunlight, secondhand smoke; and Non-Optimal Diet such as too many processed foods and inadequate nutrients/phytonutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables. If that news weren’t bad enough already, we also have to consider that our bodies naturally produce damaging free radicals as a normal part of metabolism (converting food into cellular energy) and our ability to trigger Nrf2 to protect us decreases as we age. In many ways, we need to accept the fact that our sources of stress exposure are both external and internal – and that they’re all around us and unavoidable. Since this is the world we live in, we need to use as many tools as we can to protect us – and Nrf2 triggers appear to be the perfect tool to both protect and repair your “aging” cells and realize your Best Future You.

Shawn

  • Shawn,

Woo Hoo! We are filled with gratitude for your expertise and efforts to share your wealth of knowledge with us. I am meeting with a Pharmacist tomorrow who owns six Pharmacies in San Antonio and Austin. He is familiar with oxidative stress and Nrf2! I will print your message here to further support the vital importance of Nrf2.

Safe travels. Looking forward to the next update!

For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.” Galatians 5:13
